Ambiguïty

There was a day in London, when i sat on the sofa of a cosy flat of Notting Hill with my friend Sandra and we listened to Facettes together. These were the days when i went from one record label to the other in the British capital city, with CDs in my back-bag and the determination of a soldier in my mind to get my album signed. These were also the days when signing a record deal had a completely different meaning than nowadays.

Sandra saw me like a new Alanis Morrissette. I did not get this comparison at the time. I had hardly ever heard Alanis’ work, besides “You Oughta Know” – and who had not heard that song? I felt my music was more extreme than hers.

When the song Ambiguïty played, the fourth song in the demo-album, my friend became silent and listened intently. I was not used to seeing people listening intently to my lyrics.
Besides, the simplicity of the music that supports my voice in the song did not place it among my favourites. Back in those days, i valued more the experimental aspect of music arrangements. I was at the stage of my musical development when i constantly needed to challenge myself. I overlooked simplicity which, i know now, was a stage within my growth as a songwriter.

Yet i could see that the song struck a chord in my friend’s soul. When the last note had flown away in the air, she turned to me and exclaimed: “Yes, exactly! This is so true! I also do it. I also spend time with imaginary people rather than see the real people around me.”

It was a fabulous moment of connection between her and I, another layer within our already strong friendship. And there was nothing imaginary in that friendship at all. It was anything but Real.

On that special day on a sofa of a Notthing Hill flat, I learned the connecting power of song.

Lyrics

Sometimes, I try to understand this enigma
How can I wish to be left alone?
When inside I keep making up these men, these girls
Why not keep the real ones?
The Real Ones
Two opposite ways which I walk
Without a chosen destination
A new Ambiguity
A little more of Me
A new Ambiguity
I guess I should not lose more time on the subject
The answer will be buried together with me
Together with Me
Two opposite ways which I walk
Without a chosen destination
Two opposite ways which I walk
Without a chosen destination
A new Ambiguity
A little more of Me
A new Ambiguity

Use all the powers of your imagination, surround yourself with imaginary creatures, but never neglect the real people around you. Some of them might make your life a lot more meaningful. – Eilera
